From strong sleeping pills to non-prescription antihistamines, sleeping pills can help combat insomnia and can be helpful in the event of a need. However, they are not considered to be a healthful or long-term solution to the body's natural ability to sleep. Sleeping pills are drugs and can have an effect on the external that alters the normal functioning of our bodies. Ambien and Lunesta, for example, belong to a category of drugs known as sedative-hypnotics. They are able to be used for short durations however, they aren't suggested for long-term treatment. These drugs affect the natural brain levels of certain chemicals and hormones that depress the central nervous system. They also make you feel tired. Another type of drug, like the ramelteon (Rozerem) mimics a natural hormone within the brain, known as Melatonin, which regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Suvorexant (Belsomra) is part of the class of drugs known as dual orexin receptor antagonists. It targets a brain receptor that enhances the quality of sleep under normal circumstances. It is possible for it to affect several receptors, hormones and brain chemicals through the use of various sleeping pills.
